Father's Day, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances & Boom Town

Hello all. I have been remiss in my postings. I would lie and say life got in the way, but that's a lie. I'm just lazy. So here we go on with the recap of these four episodes.

Father's Day

I have a rocky relationship with my dad, so this one hit me in the feels. More so than any other so far. I think if I was in Rose's position I would have ended up altering time too, and I don't even like my dad. Watching this episode made me wish my dad was the kind of guy who would do what Pete did in the end. I don't think he would.

The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances

Where to start? One, I am a big wimp, so the kid scared the crap out of me. I was texting a friend, threatening to bail on this episode, but he talked me out of it. I'm glad he did. Everybody lives! And the Doctor is so happy. It's great.

The reason this episode terrified me is because of the story Room Zero. This story and Abandoned by Disney left an imprint on me. I love creepypastas and for a while had a slight addiction going on. I am not going to give any hints about the stories. If you want a good thrill, follow the links.

I was told by a friend, the same one who kept me from jettisoning from this episode, that Jack Harkness is the only man he'd go gay for. That's a lot of pressure for a character to live up to. He didn't disappoint totally, but he wasn't the most amazing thing I've ever seen. He's very cocky, which isn't a turn on for me. I will admit, if I were in Rose's shoes I would have been as swept off my feet as well. By balloons.

Just picture me in her place.

Jack is handy in a pinch and I am looking forward to starting Torchwood after Doctor Who. Eh, who am I kidding? I guess I do like Jack, but I really didn't want to because the aforementioned friend loves him. He's no Doctor, but he'd do in a pinch. Even if he might be the better dancer.

I loved how this episode ended. "We do have a war on, are you sure you didn't miscount?"

Boom Town

This also ended well. Gavin has been grounded for a while, so this was his first episode in a while. I liked how devoted Mickey is, but I don't blame him for not waiting. It's hard when she's never there. But she will always be the one who got away for him. Sigh. As long as Jack doesn't move in for the kill now >.<

The Slavine was so skilled at psychological weedling. I was impressed. I am glad she gets a do over. We could all use one from time to time.

The Long Game

I watched episode 7 of season 1, The Long Game, last night. As usual, I was not disappointed. Simon Pegg was in it! I love Simon Pegg and would have his nerd babies likethat if given the chance.

Imagine how adorably evil our nerd babies would look if I bred with this iteration of Simon Pegg.

Here are some of my thoughts from this episode:

  • Wow, Adam is a pussy. Definitely don't like this guy.
  • They need to find a babysitter for Adam before he fucks something up.
  • The Doctor is really hard on Cathica. Chick is just trying to do her job. I can totally relate.
  • That's Fran from Black Books, which is another great British show that people should check out if they haven't already.

I knew he needed a sitter! There he goes with the fucking it up.

  • What do they feed Simon Pegg's boss? There are corpses hanging out up there, that are going to waste. Nom nom nom.
  • I hope Cathica leads the people in a thought revolution. She should get something after waiting for that promotion for so long.
  • I am so glad they gave Adam the boot!
Obviously, most of this episode was spent wishing bad things on Adam, and the universe did not disappoint. Today the goal is to watch 3 more episodes, and of course, I will post here, because I know you are all waiting for my view point on this.

I leave you with Gavin's Doctor Who picture. Can you guess what it is?

Spring has sprung!

It is definitely spring here at the Nerd house. (Nerd is my title and my name. Deal with it.) I have been laid up lately with a broken ankle, but I am still trying to get out and get things done, and before he left, Aaron got a lot done too. He added a river rock maintenance strip along the front of the house  and he has cleared and leveled the space behind the shed so that we could put paver stones down and get some blackberry free storage back there. My sister's friend Hal came over and helped me out by digging a flower bed along the side of the yard there.

I didn't steal it, I borrowed it. This is the front of our house, a la Google Maps.

As you can see, there were plants, but there wasn't a lot going on in the yard. Now the rose bushes are trimmed back and in their own defined space. I planted bulbs along the drive way leading to the house and have a few blue flowers in there as well. I got a spiffy planter box for the window right by the front door and have some prettiness happening right up front. And I have a jasmine plant in front of our office window now.

My dad was amazing enough to help me haul 140 bricks from Home Depot home (I can do a lot with this laid up foot, but that wasn't going to be one of them). Home Depot is having a Spring Black Friday sale and we got our supplies for 50% off. SCORE! I took a few pictures so that I can share what the yard looks like now. It is still a work in progress, but it's slowly but surely getting there.

These bricks are already in place and waiting on me to get more mulch from Lowes.

The trench has been dug for these, so I just need to go through and get them placed.

I am going to have to have help using the cultivator so I can dig a trench for these and get that puppy sectioned off.

This is my apple tree in the backyard. It is beautiful right now with all the blossoms, and will delicious in a few months with all the apples.

We are going to ignore the fact that two of the plants have already gone to the great garden in the sky.

We started some seeds so we can get our veggie on come summer

And to cap off my green thumb post, I will show you guys the awesome green mani that I am rocking. China Glaze, or course.

Testing... 1,2,3 and also "Dalek"

I feel I should dispel any high expectations right off the bat. 'Linda the Nerd and her Adventures' makes my life sound much more interesting than it is. I figured I would use this space as a place to tell people about what's happening in the nerd hub that is our home and maybe post quick reviews about shows and games. And maaaayyyyybbbbeee there would be legitimate excitement thrown your way too if you follow. But I don't want you to be on the edge of your seat waiting for the crazy to hit you in the face. My life isn't that exciting.

For those who don't know me, I guess I should introduce myself and my little family. My name is Linda (but if you were astute, you would have surmised that from the name of this blog...) and I am 29 years old. I married my best friend and Dungeons and Dragons partner Aaron in 2007. In 2008 we welcomed Gavin in to the world, and hope to imbue him with our nerdiness so that it can be carried on through the generations. In 2013 we welcomed Luna in to our home, our giant Newfoundland/Lab mix.

Aaron is in the Army National Guard and will be training with them until March 2015 (I can hear what you're thinking, 'Wow, that is a long time.' Yes, yes it is and every other person who knows how long he'll be gone has already told us that, so keep that bit to yourself.) I have decided that Gavin and I should watch all of the seasons of Doctor Who before he returns. Technically, my goal is to catch up on every episode since 2005 until now by August when the new seasons start. We started a little over a week ago and we just finished episode 6 of series 1, Dalek. My thoughts are as follows:

  • Who is that little British guy? Is he trying to get smarmy with Rose? Because I want Rose and the Doctor to end up together, and I am not a fan of this new tag along right now. GET OFF HER, MAN!
Here's the smarmy bastard now.
  • If that was the last Dalek left, how are they still a villain in this show after this? They should have made him live and infected all of them with Rose's touchy feeliness, then they could start a support group for each other and give up the exterminating business.
  • What's Godart going to do with all the money she is essentially stealing from van Statten? That would make an interesting show all on its own.
  • I need the Doctor to tell Rose he loves her like I need oxygen to breathe. Need it!
I will try to post a few of my lingering questions and impressions of the episode here as we go along in the series. I've never seen this show before now, so please don't tell me what's coming next. I will have to shank you.

That is it for today! Hopefully I'll have more episodes to comment on tomorrow.
